Grammar Explanation
Veiksmažodžiai, or verbs, are words that express actions, states, or processes in Lithuanian. They are essential in forming sentences because they indicate what the subject is doing or experiencing. Like in many languages, verbs in Lithuanian change their forms depending on tense, person, number, mood, and sometimes gender. Verbs are at the core of expressing actions (to read, to go, to see), feelings (to love, to hope), and states of being (to be, to live).
Lithuanian verbs are conjugated according to tense (present, past, future), person (1st, 2nd, 3rd), and number (singular, plural). They also change according to mood (indicative, imperative, subjunctive/conditional), voice (active, passive), and can be either regular or irregular. Common situations for using verbs include describing daily activities, giving commands, talking about preferences, stating facts, and making plans.
Examples
- •“Aš valgau obuolį. (I am eating an apple.)”
- •“Tu eini į mokyklą. (You are going to school.)”
- •“Jis skaito knygą. (He is reading a book.)”
- •“Mes gyvensime Vilniuje. (We will live in Vilnius.)”
- •“Jie dirbo visą dieną. (They worked all day.)”
- •“Ar tu supranti lietuviškai? (Do you understand Lithuanian?)”
- •“Mokytoja prašė rašyti atsargiai. (The teacher asked (us) to write carefully.)”
- •“Būk atsargus! (Be careful!)”
Tips
- 💡Remember that the verb usually comes after the subject in a simple Lithuanian sentence.
- 💡Don’t forget to match the verb ending to both the person and number of the subject.
- 💡Watch out for irregular verbs like 'eiti' (to go) and 'būti' (to be) as they do not follow standard conjugation patterns.
- 💡Practice conjugating regular verbs in all persons to notice patterns and build automaticity.
- 💡Listening to native speakers will help you intuitively grasp correct verb forms and usage.
