Grammar Explanation

Pronouns (Lithuanian: įvardžiai) are words used in place of nouns or names to avoid repetition and to make sentences clearer and more concise. They can refer to people, things, or concepts, and their meaning depends on the context. Pronouns are common in everyday conversation, storytelling, asking and answering questions, and giving instructions.

Lithuanian pronouns change their form according to grammatical case, number (singular/plural), and gender (masculine/feminine). Major types of pronouns include personal pronouns (aš - I, tu - you, jis - he), possessive pronouns (mano - my, tavo - your), demonstrative pronouns (tas - that, šis - this), reflexive pronouns, relative pronouns, and interrogative pronouns. Using the correct form is important to ensure clarity and grammatical accuracy in communication.

Examples

  • Aš noriu valgyti. (I want to eat.)
  • Jis eina į mokyklą. (He is going to school.)
  • Tai yra mano knyga. (This is my book.)
  • Mes matėme juos vakar. (We saw them yesterday.)
  • Ar tu žinai, kas tai yra? (Do you know what this is?)
  • Kuris iš jų yra tavo draugas? (Which one of them is your friend?)
  • Ji pati padarė namų darbus. (She did the homework herself.)
  • Jos automobilis yra naujas. (Her car is new.)

Tips

  • 💡Remember that Lithuanian pronouns must agree in gender, number, and case with the noun they replace or refer to.
  • 💡A common mistake is using the wrong case form—practice declension tables for personal pronouns.
  • 💡To remember the personal pronouns, note the first letters: aš (I), tu (you), jis/ji (he/she), mes (we), jūs (you, plural/polite), jie/jos (they, masculine/feminine).
  • 💡Practice with simple sentences and gradually substitute nouns for pronouns to build confidence.
  • 💡Watch for reflexive pronouns (e.g., pats, pati) because their meaning changes depending on the context and who is emphasized.
