Grammar Explanation

In Lithuanian, conjunctions (jungtukai) are words used to connect words, phrases, or clauses within a sentence. They work similarly to conjunctions in English, linking ideas to show relationships such as addition, contrast, cause, condition, and alternative. Common Lithuanian conjunctions include 'ir' (and), 'bet' (but), 'nes' (because), 'ar' (or), and 'kad' (that).

Conjunctions are used to make sentences more complex and expressive. They can join similar parts of speech (like nouns with nouns or verbs with verbs), clauses, or even full sentences. Some conjunctions require specific word order or may only be used in certain contexts, such as subordinating conjunctions like 'kad' or 'jeigu' (if) introducing subordinate clauses. Understanding conjunctions is essential for forming natural, fluent, and accurate Lithuanian sentences, especially in both written and spoken language.

Examples

  • Aš valgau obuolį ir bananą. (I am eating an apple and a banana.)
  • Jis nori eiti, bet neturi laiko. (He wants to go, but doesn't have time.)
  • Mes liksime namuose, nes lyja. (We will stay at home because it is raining.)
  • Ar tu skaitei šią knygą ar ne? (Have you read this book or not?)
  • Aš žinau, kad tu pavargai. (I know that you are tired.)
  • Jeigu nori, gali prisijungti. (If you want, you can join.)
  • Ji dirba greitai ir efektyviai. (She works quickly and efficiently.)

Tips

  • 💡Memorize the most common conjunctions ('ir', 'bet', 'nes', 'ar', 'kad', 'jeigu') to recognize them easily in sentences.
  • 💡Don't use a comma before 'ir' when linking only two items, but use one when joining full clauses (e.g., 'Jis skaito, ir ji klauso.').
  • 💡Be careful not to confuse 'kad' (that) with 'ką' (what); 'kad' introduces clauses, not questions.
  • 💡Practice combining short sentences into longer ones using conjunctions to get comfortable with structure.
  • 💡Remember that subordinate clauses often change verb position; pay attention to examples.
