Grammar Explanation

Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns. They give more information about a person, place, thing, or idea.

In English, adjectives usually come before the noun they describe. Unlike many other languages, English adjectives do not change form based on gender or number.

Adjectives can describe qualities like size, color, shape, age, origin, material, and opinion.

Examples

  • The tall building is downtown.
  • She has beautiful green eyes.
  • This is an interesting book.
  • The old wooden chair needs repair.
  • He bought an expensive Italian car.

Tips

  • 💡Adjectives in English don't change for plural: "a big dog" and "big dogs" (not "bigs dogs").
  • 💡Multiple adjectives follow a specific order: opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material.
  • 💡"Very" can intensify most adjectives: very tall, very interesting.
  • 💡Some adjectives can't be compared: unique, perfect, complete.
