Grammar Explanation
Verbs are action words that express what someone or something does, experiences, or is. Every complete sentence needs at least one verb.
The present simple tense describes habits, general truths, and regular actions. For third person singular (he, she, it), add -s or -es to the base verb.
Verbs can also express states of being (is, am, are) or help other verbs (have, do, will).
Examples
- •“I work in an office.”
- •“She plays tennis every weekend.”
- •“The sun rises in the east.”
- •“They have two children.”
- •“He does his homework every day.”
Tips
- 💡Add -s for most verbs: work → works, play → plays.
- 💡Add -es for verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -o: go → goes, watch → watches.
- 💡For verbs ending in consonant + y, change y to i and add -es: study → studies.
- 💡"Have" becomes "has" for third person singular.
