What the Spanish levels mean (CEFR)
The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) describes language ability in six levels, from A1 to C2. Your result uses the same scale.
| Level | At this level you can… | On LingLea |
|---|---|---|
| A1Beginner | understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases, introduce yourself and ask simple questions. | 7 reading texts |
| A2Elementary | understand sentences about everyday topics such as family, shopping and work, and handle simple, routine exchanges. | 7 reading texts |
| B1Intermediate | understand the main points of clear texts on familiar topics, cope with most travel situations and describe experiences and plans. | 6 reading texts |
| B2Upper Intermediate | understand the main ideas of complex texts, talk fluently and spontaneously with native speakers and give a clear, detailed opinion. | 6 reading texts |
| C1Advanced | understand long, demanding texts and implied meaning, and express yourself fluently and flexibly at work and in study. | 6 reading texts |
| C2Proficient | understand virtually everything you hear or read and express yourself precisely, with fine shades of meaning. | 6 reading texts |
Need an official certificate?
The DELE diplomas from the Instituto Cervantes (A1–C2) are official and never expire. SIELE is a single online exam that reports your level from A1 to C1.
How the test works
- About 20–26 multiple-choice questions on grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening.
- It adapts as you go: a right answer brings a harder question, a wrong one an easier question.
- Your result is the CEFR level that best fits all your answers, with a breakdown by skill.
- Free and anonymous: nothing is saved unless you choose to save your level.
Questions about Spanish levels
Is B1 or B2 higher?
B2 is higher. The levels go A1 and A2 (basic user), B1 and B2 (independent user), C1 and C2 (proficient user). At B2 you can follow most conversations and texts, including on abstract topics.
Which level counts as fluent?
For everyday purposes most people call B2 fluent: you can talk spontaneously without much effort. C1 and C2 are fluency for academic and professional settings.
How accurate is this test?
It places most people within one level. Each answer decides how hard the next question is, and the result is the level that best fits all your answers. Choose “I don’t know” instead of guessing for the most accurate result.
How long does it take to go up a level?
Cambridge English estimates roughly 200 hours of guided study per level, more at the higher levels. It depends on how often you practise and how close the language is to one you already know.
Do I get a certificate?
No. This test is a free guide to your level. For an official certificate, take one of the exams listed above.
