Grammar Explanation

Conjunctions (conjunciones) are words that link other words, phrases, or clauses together. In Spanish, as in English, conjunctions are essential for forming complex and compound sentences, allowing us to express relationships like addition, contrast, cause, purpose, and condition. They are crucial for making speech and writing more fluid and connected.

Spanish conjunctions can be coordinating (joining elements of equal grammatical rank, like 'y' for 'and', or 'pero' for 'but') or subordinating (joining a main clause with a dependent one, like 'porque' for 'because', or 'aunque' for 'although'). It is important to use each type correctly; for example, knowing when to use 'o' (or), 'ni' (nor), or 'sin embargo' (however). Common contexts include narration, explanations, and expressing opinions.

Examples

  • Juan y Ana estudian juntos todos los días.
  • Quiero ir al cine, pero no tengo dinero.
  • María no come carne ni pescado.
  • Puedes elegir té o café para beber.
  • No salgas hasta que termine de llover.
  • Me llamó porque necesitaba ayuda.
  • Aunque hace frío, salgo a correr.
  • Estudié mucho, así que pasé el examen.

Tips

  • 💡Remember that 'y' (and) changes to 'e' before words that start with the sound 'i' or 'hi', like 'padre e hijo.'
  • 💡Do not mix up 'pero' (but) with 'sino'; use 'sino' to correct a negative idea: 'No quiero agua, sino té.'
  • 💡Pay attention to punctuation: unlike English, Spanish sometimes omits the comma before conjunctions.
  • 💡Practice combining short sentences using conjunctions to build confidence.
  • 💡Some conjunctions, like 'aunque' or 'cuando', can trigger the subjunctive—review these special cases.
